IN SOUNDS FROM THE FAR OUT
Riding with Night Horse, Spindrift and Tee Pee Records

Tee Pee Records’ Night Horse
“I hope you brought your earplugs,” Justin Maranga says as we walk through a loading dock stranded in a section of North Hollywood industrial wasteland. Maranga leads me down the sparse corridor in a warehouse-turned–practice space, past a row of doors and into a high-ceilinged room. The wires jutting out of the ceiling look like the entrails of a dead building. We pass a Cold War–era soda machine and step up to a gunmetal-gray door marked “11.” Maranga pushes it open to reveal a room towering with amplifiers, cords snaking across the floor. The four other members of rock-&-roll band Night Horse stand poised at their instruments.
It’s 11 a.m. on a Saturday. Good morning.
Bassist Nick D’Itri leans on his amp near a broken-looking organ crouched in the corner. Guitarist Greg Buensuceso runs through a lick in front of his Orange amplifier. At the center of the room, Justin Pierce sits behind his drum set and trash-talks Maranga as we walk in. Maranga wastes no time getting started. He strokes his long, reddish beard once, straps on his guitar and rips into the strings. What comes out is the Southern rock–brushed “Come Down Halo,” from the band’s recently released split 7-inch single with Sea of Air. Singer Sam James Velde, former member of rock outfit Bluebird, shakes his hair and lifts one hand to the rafters while the other clutches the mic stand. Here, in the privacy of their practice space, they rip through the Allman Brothers–tinged dual guitar lines and growling bass of “Choose Your Side,” and the rowdy, roadhouse blues of “Good Bye Gone.” “We sped up too much on that one,” Maranga tells the other guys, most of whom were friends from their high school days in Thousand Oaks.
They’re halfway though this Saturday-morning practice session, and the guys have a lot of work ahead of them. Buensuceso also has to get to his grandmother’s birthday party soon, so in these few hours, they’ve got to get it right. Night Horse doesn’t sound rusty, but it’s been a while since the members have all rehearsed together, and one of their biggest shows quickly approaches: Sunset Junction. It’s a crucial moment offering serious exposure for the down-home rockers, a chance to spread their sound to an audience as yet untapped.
Night Horse’s style is familiar but indiscernible; their cocksure barroom vocals and guitar-solo tradeoffs would be at home at CBGB (R.I.P.). “We’re first and foremost a rock & roll band, but we try not to be too derivative,” says Velde. If Night Horse has any derivations, they come from their label, Tee Pee Records, the New York–based outfit that curates the finest in no-gimmick, back-to-basics rock bands.
Founded in 1995 by Tony Presedo, Tee Pee earned high marks for early, seminal releases from drone rockers Sleep and High on Fire, along with weirdos Brian Jonestown Massacre. Presedo parted ways with the label in August 2008 (he now heads up the culinary mash-up Territory BBQ + Records). Under the direction of Steve Dolcemaschio, the “almost-24-year-old” (as he tells me) general manager, the label has cultivated its lineup into an L.A.-centric list heavy on the psychedelic tip. “We are trying to make a label that puts out good music, for the sake of the music,” Dolcemaschio says. Last year he was an intern at Tee Pee, and now he runs the label. The boutique imprint has a staff of four in New York, but supports a roster of eight bands in L.A., six of which were signed or re-signed in 2009. From the Western flavor of Spindrift and the dark, postapocalyptic haunt of label newcomers Black Math Horseman to Maranga and Pierce’s other band, the epic wall of rock experimentalists, Ancestors, Tee Pee’s latest signings are collectively infused with layers and sonic textures usually absent from the endless noodling of some stoner effusium.
Last July, Tee Pee brought together many of its bands for the first annual New Weird America Fest at L.A.’s Nomad Gallery. The show, named after the “new weird America” freak folk-musical phylum that bubbled up around 2003, in many ways marked a new moment in Los Angeles music — or at least a reimagining of movements past. It had been years since Arthur Fest brought the finest experimental, psychedelic and folk musics to L.A.; FYF Fest, although presenting a phenomenal lineup, appealed more to Vice Magazine enthusiasts and American Apparel fans. New Weird America represented a realigning of the new psychedelic sounds with roots in Los Angeles’ far-out history.
“It reminded me of being in the desert, of going to see Kyuss out at a generator party, and that kind of community,” desert sage and songwriter Imaad Wasif told me while at indie radio station KXLU. The Coachella Valley native, with family roots in India, played the New Weird America Fest and looked the part of this burgeoning psych scene. His matchstick legs were shrink-wrapped into jeans, his long, wavy hair fell onto the shoulders of his gray military-looking jacket. At times, he speaks like a mystic. “It’s all about creating this cycle of birth, death and growth,” Wasif says about the spiritual nature of his upcoming album, The Voidist (out October 13), which melds melodic acoustic strumming with swirling psych breakdowns. “I didn’t realize it as a kid, but how my parents raised me, with our food and Indian lifestyle, was almost like a mystic in India,” Wasif says. “All of my songs have an embodiment of a character, which is me, and this oracle. I believe in this androgyny within myself.”

VOICE BOX

My buddy Pat's band is featured in the New York "Village Voice" this week. Glad to know there are actual music writers out there that know how to write and write about good things happening outside of the PR grindmill! Peep it here:

The Nils

Been jamming out to lots of pop influenced late 80s/early 90s punk/rock lately. Stuff like late Husker Du, Soul Asylum (dont cringe "Hang Time is a great record), Lemonheads, Big Drill Car, Seaweed, Doughboys, etc. But man, it's The Nils that take the cake.
.......From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Nils was a Canadian power-pop punk rock band originating in Montreal, Quebec which produced several releases between 1978 and 1994.
The band was founded in 1978 by then 12-year old Alex Soria with his brother Carlos Soria. The band never achieved widespread fame despite critical success and a following amongst other musicians in the genre. "... but what surprises me most is how many I run into, or hear from, who say they loved the Nils or were directly influenced by them. The Goo Goo Dolls, Superchunk, Jawbox, Meat Puppets, Down By Law, Bob Mould and many of the power-pop punk bands(too many to name), all rave about the Nils."
-Here's a link to their last record. Its so good.

GRAVEYARD
Their self titled debut resurrects the sounds of 70’s psychedelic rock. The clash of folk, psychedelic, and blues makes for a mind-bending trip back to the days of Cream, Sabbath, and Blue Cheer. Graveyard brings back to life all that is right with rock and roll, from the dark haze that is brought upon by the space blues of “Blue Soul” to the rocking trip of “Submarine Blues”. The band proves they have what it takes to hang with the classics while delivering a sound that is all their own.

NIGHT HORSE
Tradition lies deep in the music of Los Angeles rock and roll group NIGHT HORSE, which features members of dirge soundscapists Ancestors and the vocal styling of Sam James Velde, formerly of explorative and adventurous rockers Bluebird. NIGHT HORSE bring a saddle bag full of heavy, raw and riffed-out blues-tinged rock steeped in the likes of John Lee Hooker, Taste, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and The Allman Brothers Band without a retro stitch. NIGHT HORSE rein in the past with a firm heel in the present, galloping next to such like-minded contemporaries as Harvey Milk, Down and Priestess.

GENTLEMAN

GINGER BAKER ON FELA KUTI
by Jay Babcock
originally published in Mean #6 (Dec 99-Jan 00) as part of a FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI giant feature.
Best known for his work with Cream, Ginger Baker is one of the all-time great drummers, a versatile master at ease in a number of the world's drumming traditions. He also has a reputation as an imposing interview subject. Still, at his wife's recommendation, Mean called Ginger at his South African home at 7am, interrupting his bath. Here's how the conversation went.
When did you meet Fela?
Ginger Baker: I knew Fela since the very early '60s, when he was at the World College of Music. He used to play trumpet, and come and sit in the all-night jams which I played in... 1960-61... I went to Nigeria in 1970, that's when I saw Fela again. I [inaudible] there from 1970 to 1976...
I'm sorry, did you say you were living there during that time?
[voice rising] I lived in Nigeria from 1970 until 1976!
[pause] Uh. Okay. What can you tell me about making the record with Fela?
Absolutely nothing. [pause] That was a combination of a lot of things before it, that we made the record, and a lot of things after it. It wasn't just a one-off thing, I mean I did a five-week tour with Fela's band when Tony Allen was ill.
Oh, okay--
"Oh, okay." Yes. ISN'T THAT FUCKING AMAZING? "How extraordinary!" Fucking,
man...
When did you do that?
During the period I was in Nigeria! Do you think I keep a diary and write things down?!?
No, I'm just trying to get it straight-
Between 1970 and 1975! That five-year period.
Okay...um...some people say...How much of Fela's sound, do you think, came from James Brown, and how much of it was his own thing?
100% of it was his own thing. Completely his own thing. Absolutely nothing to do with James Brown.
Really?
Fela blew James Brown off the stage when he came to Nigeria.
What...did they-
"Whu-whu-ohmygawd-whoa-have I got a story here!" Fuck, man. You're talking to someone who [inaud] here.
[pause] Um. When did they play together? Do you remember the circumstances? Was it a big stadium show-
I can't remember, exactly. You'll have to check it out. I'm sure you've got records you can check out.
Um...so how did [drummer] Tony Allen work with Fela?
Tony Allen tuned the band up. Virtually in charge of the whole situation.
But the arrangements for the songs were Fela's?
That was Fela.
So you were there in Nigeria when Fela had an incredible band.
That was the best band he ever had. The very first band had a tenor player called Igo Chiko...before Fela played tenor, Igo Chiko was the tenor player, who was pretty fucking cool. He had a row with Fela and left the band and that's when Fela took up tenor saxophone. [pause] The band with Igo Chiko was THE happening band.
And that's the band you recorded with?
That's the band I toured with too.
So Tony was ill and you filled in for him?
Yeah, Tony was sick.
How did that work out?
It was terrible, I got fired every night, they threw eggs and bottles at me and told me to fuck off cuz I was a white man.
Ah...
What do you think?!? No, of course it was FUCKING ALRIGHT! OTHERWISE I WOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT!
[pause] Well. I mean, had you been sitting in with the band much prior to that?
Yes I had, I used to sit in regularly with the band because people used to ask me to, especially Fela. Fela and I were very, very good friends. You know...Fela got very political. His music, instead of being humorous, became very political and he upset the Nigerian Army, which is not a good thing to do. [long pause]
Right. I'm pretty familiar with the politics, as much as I can be from
reading these books and-
No, I don't think most people know everything that went down that led up to that event. I know more of it than most people. I mean, there were a whole load of events that lead up to it. It wasn't suddenly... The Nigerians got very, very worried about Fela. The Kalakuta Party held a political rally in Lagos City Stadium and got 250,000 people there!
That's the thing that's so hard to grasp, isn't it, how extremely popular he was, and how radical. But was it simply an anti-corruption thing for him, or was he a socialist-
No. I blame the people who were around Fela at the time. Fela himself was an incredibly humorous, wonderful fellow. Some pretty radical people got very close to Fela. I think they misadvised him some. I really believe Fela could have become president...How good a president he would've been, I don't know. I mean, how good a president would I be? [laughter] He took a couple of wrong turns, that, tome were very un-Fela-like. It really wasn't like Fela. It was the committee...We used to sit round a table the shape of Africa. Called The African Table. And I was on that committee for two years.
So as Fela got more popular--
They got over-confident. Several of Fela's people heavily provoked the military, yes. Not a very good idea in a place like Nigeria.
Bill [Laswell] told me Nigeria was one of the most corrupt, evil places on the face of the earth...
Absolute rubbish. Absolute rubbish. When I mentioned this, when I was in Ghana, about the corruption, the reply I received was, 'Where do you think we learnt it?' The British government is the most corrupt government in the world. Or it used to be. I think the American government is now the most corrupt government in the world. And if you don't think that, if you can't
see that, then there's something wrong with you. [pause] Corruption in Africa is on a finer scale compared to the corruption in the United States or the United Kingdom. They cover it up pretty well, they're not quite so open about it. That is the fact.
Well...um...what about the harassment by the military, by the police?
Harassment of Fela? [chuckling] The harassment was a two-way thing.
Really? What do you mean?
Well, you know, Fela won a court case against the Nigerian police where he won a lot of money, when his house was first raided, when they came to arrest the underage girls that Fela had just married...
...And there were other times when he embarrassed the police?
Pretty much so, yeah. Some of it was very cleverly done. After the police thing, Fela got really angry about the Army being on traffic duty with whips. And he brought out a record called Zombie. That was the period when things started going awry. I think I had left Nigeria by this time.
Oh. Right.
See, Fela was in the same position I am. There's an awful lot of stories, exaggerated, done by people like you...[laughs]...tend to get things arse about face, you've probably got everything I've said arse about face...
[Nervous laugh] I'm getting it all on tape, Ginger, I don't want to misquote you...
Yeah, but when you edit the tape, you could come up with...I've had it done to me so many times. Fela has, too. Really Fela was a wonderfully nice fellow, you know, who was EXTREMELY popular. He was far more popular than James Brown in Africa by a country mile. I don't mean 'slightly.' Fela was an incredibly popular fellow, and his music was incredible, especially, you know, in that period of the early '70s.
What did he have that his competitors didn't?
He didn't have any competitors. [laughs] There was nobody doing what Fela was doing. It was just...heh...you had to go to Fela's club to see that. You didn't see anybody that wasn't moving. The whole place was jumping. He had several clubs-the Afro-Spot, the Shrine, various places. One stunt he used to do...when the Shrine was on the opposite side of the main Lagos road, they would close the road before the gig, and cause a traffic jam for miles in both directions. [laughs] Completely block up Lagos. When Fela was ready to go to the gig he'd go across the road on a donkey, with all the girls and the band in a procession. And every time he did a gig they'd stop Lagos' traffic from moving. Completely. The whole of Lagos. This was a couple of times a week. The shows would go for hours. Two sets a night. If I was around, they insisted that I sat in. The favorite number everyone wanted me to play with Fela was "Gentleman." You ever hear that? That was when Fela was at his peak! It was humorous stuff. Fela had an incredible sense of humor, and [it was when] he was doing his tongue in cheek humorous stuff was when he was really hugely popular. He then started to get too political in his music...Well, it upset a lot of the band. Cuz the band were all, they were just like musicians. They were getting scared, is what happened. A lot of those really good players, you know, gave it up eventually because it was getting very heavy. Ask Tony Allen. [laughs]
In the movie you made, when you meet up with Fela, he just looks like the most generous, sweetest, good-humored person...when he comes out the door and is greeting you all in his underpants-
[laughing] Fela lived in his underpants. He used to get dressed to go onstage, but most of the time Fela walked around in his underpants.
It just looked like he was always in his underpants. And always smoking something.
Yeah, well, that was the whole thing of the Kalakuta Party, it was a smokers' party, which is why the government was so anti the thing.
What did he smoke?
Marijuana. Natural Nigerian grass. NNG. You know, most people in Africa-most of the population smoke-but it's illegal.
I've seen a few videos of Fela live...he's really yelling at the band, making sharp motions-
Fela was...ah... Have you ever been to Africa?
No.
Well, you need to. [laughs]
Yeah, see, I don't know if he was being playful, or if he was serious-
Fela could get very, very angry...All musicians get pissed off, eventually. Fela was a very nice man is what I'm trying to tell you. Very humorous fellow, just great fun to be around...

CAST NO SHADOW

Fuck if it ain't 2009. I spent last week NOT listening to music on my computer. Now that's weird and it ain't. Thats how alot of us humans listen to tunes these days, cuz you can store shitloads and it's a finger click away. If you got some good 'speaks' than 'you're in like flynn'. But I thought I'd get away from the 'puter' and get back to my dusty CD collection, some new promos I got and my good old record collection last week and presently (um like today). I had a friend stop by this weekend and she was a bit taken back that I was listening to CDs and not an ipod? Fucking weird huh? She commented, "CDs are the new LP now" Um, excuse me but I think Jesus just barfed! Anyways , I dont think this is making much sense or is even relevant. I just pounded 2 huge cups of dark coffee BTW.
Listen to music however the fuck you like. Just listen to music and go fucking nuts! The world needs it........

HELLO, GOOD BYE GONE

New Night Horse Song-Split Single!
Fresh off the heels of their critically acclaimed EP “The Dark Won’t Hide You,” Night Horse return with another heavy helping of rockin ‘blues n roll’ by the name of “Good Bye Gone.” The A side to a split single with like minded roots rockers from San Diego “Dirty Sweet.” In stores July 7th.
The 1st of 3 split singles Night Horse have planned for this summer on Tee Pee Records....more on that soon.
Night Horse do what they do best, bringing full throated, dual guitar driven jams to induce your “bangover”! “Good Bye Gone” conjures thoughts of Cactus, Mountain and the swagger of Steve Marriott’s Humble Pie, baked in the Los Angeles sun.
5 piece barnbuners, Dirty Sweet return the favor with the finessed jam “Marionette.” This sonically insurgent tune evokes the spirit of The Band, Badfinger and The Faces. Recently taking “Best Rock” honors at the San Diego Music Awards for the second straight year, Dirty Sweet are the perfect fit here.
Come take a listen to "Good Bye Gone" at www.myspace.com/nighthorsemusic

THE DARK WON'T HIDE YOU

NIGHT HORSE debuts 6 sonic hymns next week (October 21) under the title "The Dark Won't Hide You" on Tee Pee Records. Recorded and mixed by Mathias Schneeberger (Obsessed, Sunn 0))), Gutter Twins).
NIGHT HORSE rein in the past with a firm heel in the present, galloping next to such like-minded contemporaries as Harvey Milk, Down and Priestess. Delivering heavy testimonials harnessed with a twin lead guitar assault, NIGHT HORSE join hands with these brothers in arms. "The Dark Won't Hide You" brings a saddle bag full of heavy, raw and riffed-out blues-tinged rock steeped in the likes of John Lee Hooker, Taste, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and The Allman Brothers Band without a retro stitch.
In celebration, NIGHT HORSE will have shows on both coasts starting this weekend! As well as dates at this year's CMJ Music Marathon, including the Tee Pee Records showcase, and Vice "Late Night Party". Shows and more info. below:

IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR

This pic was taken by Matt Camirand (Blk Mtn), bout an hour after Sharon Jones of The Dap Kings pulled Matt and I on stage to dance with her, and sing to us in front of 17, 000 people at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Next to me is our gracious host Eva, and of course next to her is none other than 'Luda Cakes.' Sharon and The Dap Kings are in the background getting their 'eat on' after we all paid homage to Rastafari;)
Party time, excellent.

NIGHT HORSE

Ladies and Gents of the Myspace Generation......ride on!
ADD NIGHT HORSE: http://www. myspace. com/nighthorsemusic
Tradition lays deep in the music of Los Angeles rock and roll group NIGHT HORSE. Featuring members of dirge soundscapists Ancestors and the vocal styling of Sam James Velde, formerly of explorative and adventurous rockers Bluebird and El Presidente of Cold Sweat Records. NIGHT HORSE bring a saddle bag full of heavy, raw and riffed out blues steeped in the likes of John Lee Hooker, Taste, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac or The Allman Brothers without a retro stitch. NIGHT HORSE reign in the past with a firm heel in the present, galloping next to like-minded contemporaries Harvey Milk (The Pleaser), Clouds or Doomriders. Delivering heavy testimonials harnessed with a twin lead guitar assault, NIGHT HORSE join hands with these brothers in arms.
NIGHT HORSE will debut 6 sonic hymns this fall, on The Colonel Records label. Look for us on tour and in a record store near you.

Supported by: No-Neck Blues Band, Tom Greenwood (of Jackie-O Motherfucker), Spectre Folk
For those unfamiliar:
It was 1972, time of the cult-occult-commune explosion. By day, the Source Family served organic cuisine to John Lennon, Julie Christie, Frank Zappa and others at the famed Source restaurant. By night, in a mansion in Hollywood Hills, they explored the cosmos through the channeled wisdom of their charismatic leader, Father Yod. Father was an outlandish figure who had 14 “spiritual wives,” drove a Rolls-Royce, and fronted the rock band Ya Ho Wha 13, now considered by collectors to be one of the most singular psychedelic bands of all time. This is Ya Ho Wha 13's only planned East Coast performance, and is not to be missed.
